Gaelle Mellis (SA)

Gaelle is an award-winning theatre designer, maker and collaborator. She is seen as a cultural leader within both the disability arts and mainstream arts sectors.

Her designs have toured to the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, New Zealand and the United States. Gaelle has had the opportunity to collaborate with many exceptional artists and through these collaborations, she designed many award-winning productions.

She has received several awards throughout her career, including 2002 Adelaide Critics Circle Individual Award; Adelaide Fringe Festival Award for Design 2006, a 2009 South Australian Screen Award for production design Necessary Games and was awarded an Inaugural Creative Australia Fellowship, Australia Council of the Arts. Other awards include Community Service Award, Rotary Club 2013 and Women’s Honour Roll, SA Government, 2013 and is Churchill Fellow.

In 2012, Gaelle created Australia’s first performance incorporating ‘aesthetic access’, the award winning Take Up Thy Bed and Walk. In 2013, Gaelle was invited by the Theatre Board of the Australia Council as one of 15 women filmed for the Woman in Theatre exhibition that celebrated the fabulous women of the contemporary Australian theatre scene. Gaelle undertook Sync Leadership Program in 2014 and was invited back in 2015 to be mentored as a Coach.

Gaelle was the Creative Director of Access2Arts, a progressive and innovative disability-led arts organisation based in South Australia from 2013 – 2018. During her time at Access2Arts, she started Australia’s first professional Audio Description Service, provided access consultations and training, developed residencies with international artists, created successful NDIS readiness projects and produced high quality disability-led projects.
