If ‘a work of art is a scream of freedom’, (Christo b 1935, Bulgarian artist) then take the time to listen to these screams.

According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19, ‘Everyone has the right to freedom of expression…’.

These works are by Katherine artists who have rarely had the opportunity to express themselves.  For these artists, the freedom to express is often hindered by a lack of physical independence and limited resources.

This exhibition is a testament to the importance of providing the right conditions in order to give people the freedom to express themselves.

In 2017 these artists from Step Out in Katherine attended workshops at Katherine Regional Arts. The workshops were guided by local artist Jan Milner Cole. Through the introduction of various media such as brushes, sponges, pens, water balloons, and encouragement and freedom to explore, these works were produced.

There are a range of styles; some spontaneous, some precise, that reflect the personalities of the artists. Katherine Regional Arts congratulates the artists and thanks Step Out, and the Support Workers for their wonderful assistance.

This is a small selection of artworks from Freedom for Meeting Place, Alice Springs 2018.
